How a fenceless human-robot collaboration concept is helping airports automate baggage loading without sacrificing space or safety
Modern baggage handling doesn’t just need automation – it needs automation that fits into the reality of a busy airport: tight spaces, safety regulations, and staff working close to machines all day long. Together with our partner AAT Automation GmbH, we’re showcasing exactly that: the ABLEMk2 (Automated Baggage Loading Equipment), a use case built for today’s airport operations.
The challenge
Baggage loading is physically demanding work, and airports are rarely designed with extra room for large-scale automation. Any robotic solution introduced into this environment has to solve two problems at once: protect the people working alongside it, and fit into a footprint that wasn’t built for robots in the first place.
The solution
ABLEMk2 combines a Yaskawa robot with a compact system design that integrates into existing airport environments – no major infrastructure overhaul required. Equipped with AIRSKIN, the application enables safe human-robot interaction through a fenceless automation concept, meaning operators and robots can work side by side without physical barriers slowing down operations or eating up space.
